My first project ever. NFT collection I drew, coded, and launched at 16.

2022. I was 16, home during the pandemic, and wanted to make money online. NFTs were blowing up so I just went for it. I drew all the character pieces — hats, eyes, mouths, beards — then found some open-source PHP thing that mixes them into random unique combos. Built the website in plain HTML/CSS, first site I ever made. Listed on OpenSea. Tried to promote on Instagram, paid some guy in my Instagram DMs like $20 who promised me followers — he just took my money and vanished. Got scammed on my first ever marketing attempt. Still ended up selling one for like $15 which was honestly huge for 16-year-old me. Net loss technically but who's counting.

Problem

NFTs were everywhere. I had no coding skills, no design skills, no money for marketing. Decided to figure out all three at once because why not.

Solution

I drew each character trait by hand — different hats, eyes, mouths, accessories, backgrounds. Found an open-source PHP script online that takes all the parts and randomly combines them into unique characters. That's how I got 1000 unique designs without drawing each one. Built the site in raw HTML and CSS, hosted on Netlify. Minted 87 items on OpenSea on Polygon. Made a Discord server, ran some giveaways, tried to build a community. The Instagram marketing was a total bust — paid some random guy from DMs who promised engagement, got absolutely nothing. Expensive lesson for a 16-year-old.

Outcome

Made about $15 total. Not exactly life-changing money. But this is the project that got me into coding. I went from zero to actually having something live on the internet that people could buy. Drew it, coded it, deployed it, marketed it (badly), sold it. All by myself. Everything I've built since started because of this.

Lessons

  • Don't pay random people on Instagram for marketing.
  • You learn more from one real project than a year of tutorials.
  • The first $15 you earn from something you built yourself hits different.

Stack

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, React, Framer Motion
